I may get hate mail over this post. I have a fantastic husband. So fantastic that while we were in Las Vegas he took me to the Christian Louboutin store in the Venetian and offered to buy me the most gorgeous pair of high heels.

Yup, that’s my foot in a platform heeled, peep toe, leopard print, patent leather piece of art. I was sneaking to take pictures because I didn’t want to look like I was crazy. So why have I not been shouting from the rooftops about my beautiful shoes? Because I turned down my husband’s offer to buy me the shoes.
I’ll wait…have you caught you breath? Closed your mouth?
I just couldn’t justify spending $800+ on a pair of shoes. I felt physically ill thinking about it. And I didn’t think they fit my life – I don’t do anything that fabulous to wear those shoes. So what’s a shoe lover to do? I’ve found my temporary fix – an inexpensive alternative.

The original Christian Louboutin Hidden Platform Pump in Leopard is $800 and the Jessica Simpson ‘Parigi’ Pump is under $80 right now. By no means do they compare in terms of artistry, but I can sleep at night with the less expensive pair in my closet!
Don’t hate me forever, please.

Good for you! Not for turning down the offer par se but for knowing exactly what you want from fashion and indulging in something purely because it’s a label. Your alternative are gorgeous and it least you won’t feel guilty wearing them in the rain!

Proud of you D. I face the same conflict often (not the husband offering to buy me $800 shoes…..and honestly, I think he knows me well enough by now to know that I would be mad if he did) I digress…..BUT, the conflict of appreciating fashion and being just plain practical. Like you said…..where am I going to wear shoes like that often enough for it to be worth it. I envy those who are able to do it. But I have to keep it real because I can’t hang.

Thanks everybody for the comments. Washington Post Express actually featured an excerpt in their Bloglines today about it. I’m glad you all still love me even though I turned down the Louboutins. xoxo DWJ

Dear DWJ,
This is a difficult time in our relationship but I find it in my heart to forgive you.

Actually, I can understand you turning them down if you’re not going to wear them often. The JS ones are a little tamer too which makes them easier to pull off than the OTT Loubs.
Now if these had been understated “Simple Pumps”, I’d have not recovered from you saying no

I’m the same way. I have a limit that I don’t dare go over. I said that even though we can afford to do it, I love to exercise restraint and then I end up with more than one pair of shoes. Great post!

OMG! WTF! I would eat, sleep, sh*$, F!#$ and everything else in those $800 shoes. People would start asking why I wore them EVERYDAY!

I know this post is old but I love that you were practical about your decision. And I’m not gonna lie…I’m in love with your second choice!
