I have recently been looking at drugstore brands to talk about on the blog and to help save a bit of cash (I heart Bobbi Brown but sometimes you don’t want to drop $50 for tinted moisturizer or foundation). So I decided to test out the Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse.
The coverage was actually very nice – I was pleasantly surprised. I liked how light the liquid mousse felt but you could also build up the coverage. My only issue was that I’m in between two shades – Caramel and Cocoa. Fortunately I got them on sale at CVS and had $5 in Extra-Bucks so I think I paid about $10 for the two bottles (way less than department store brands) and I’ve blended the two colors together to kind of custom blend my own foundation.
So yesterday I was home and I had a B-RILLIANT idea. Why not make my own tinted moisturizer? I like foundation but as the weather gets warmer I like to lighten up on my coverage. So how’d I do it?

I picked up a squeezable small travel bottle at my beloved Walgreens and a long cuticle stick to help me stir it all up. At home I already had a bottle of Oil of Olay moisturizer that I kept for backup and I had the two bottles of Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse. I filled the bottle about two thirds with moisturizer and I squeezed in 40 pumps of the lighter shade with 25 pumps of the darker shade. Stir it with the stick and then shake it up A LOT. Keep adding color until the mixture stops being white and looks close to the color of your other tinted moisturizer.

I was pretty proud of the results. On the left is my mixture and on the right is Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer. My version is a bit thicker because of my choice of moisturizer (I’d suggest a sensitive/fragrance free light moisturizer with a thickness you like) but it covers nicely and feels so light and moisturizing on my skin. I’m so proud of my little homemade concoction!

I’m IMPRESSED and you’ve totally inspired me to try this. I am on such a tight budget right now that I need to find a cheaper alternative. THANK YOU DWJ!
I do a homemade bodyscrub with honey, brown sugar and olive oil. I know it sounds weird but it totally works.
omg, i’m so going to try this… i have been needing a tinted moisturizer for a while now so this is perfect.

Jenine, it was soooo easy and I’ve been wearing it ever since I made it. I may not go back to buying the expensive stuff again!
Very good idea! I’ve mixed moisturizer and foundation here and there but hadn’t thought to mix together a whole bottle. Thanks for sharing your experience and recipe!
