Before I tell you what I’m reading, make sure you read my Q&A at the Affordable Scarves blog. I’ll also be talking about one of my favorite scarves from their store in the next week! Okay…on to today’s topic.
Over my holiday break I had a million coupons and Borders Bucks so I decided to pick up Eric Daman’s You Know You Want It: Style-Inspiration-Confidence. I wanted to get this style book because Eric Daman is the costume designer for Gossip Girl, he won an Emmy as the assistant designer on Sex and the City and he is the creative consultant for Charlotte Russe. Pretty good credentials, right? Plus, I adore Gossip Girl and love how they’re styled and when I saw the UV Coated Graffiti style cover of the book (excuse me for my dorky publishing speak…it’s a habit from my days of book design) I was sold.
It’s clear that Eric Daman is a great stylist but this book fell a little flat for me. I own several style books and sometimes you feel like everyone says the same things over and over again and don’t put their own spin on style and that’s what I was hoping Daman would do.
He does say that you have to own your look, you have to have confidence – and that’s a message a lot of style books seem to leave out. In the end I guess I was hoping for more transformations, more visuals…just more in general. It was the kind of book that made me say, well if he could do this I could totally write my own The Art of Accessories Guide to Style!
