Cooking Light: Breakfast Braid

DSCN1705From September 2009 – December 2009 I lost 20 pounds. I stopped eating out as much and joined the gym. I try to workout at least 3 times a week and because I have a decent skill level in the kitchen and because I enjoy it, I cook. When I mentioned cooking a few folks said they’d love for me to share recipes and what I’m loving, so I’ll try to do a Cooking Light segment a couple of times a month.

What you should know up front is that I’m obsessed with Cooking Light Magazine and I’ve built a week’s worth of meals from an issue. I like them because it’s light cooking but it is definitely full on flavor. My latest obsession is a recent feature called the Jalapeño, Sausage, Jack, and Egg Breakfast Braid.

This is a little bit of egg, onion, chicken sausage, cheese, and jalapeño wrapped up in a yummy crust. My husband and I love it because you can slice it up and have it for 2 or 3 days as your breakfast on the go instead of something you buy in the freezer section. I made one and brought it over to my parent’s house last weekend and my sister told me it looked like something that came from Panera – what a great compliment! Per serving it has 164 calories and 10.4 grams of fat. It’s satisfying and really tasty and I’d definitely suggest you try it. For the recipe click the link above and look below for a slide show of my images of me making it at home.

  1. OMG that looks so good! I am so making that this weekend. I think that yours looks 1000 times better then the one in CL! Good job Dana and I am excited that you are going to be sharing recipes!

    • @Edythe You definitely have to make it. It’s so simple and easy and my husband wants it every weekend now! HA!

@Jaci thank you, thank you 😉

  2. Looks awesome! I usually can’t deal with cooking light, because even though it SOUNDS good, the pictures look..not so hot. Thanks for taking a gorgeous photo…will be making this weekend!

    • @LA Cochran Pillsbury makes a really yummy crust and they make it in just a baking sheet (I think that’s what they call it now). It’s flaky and buttery AND you can get a coupon for it on their website!

  3. First, congrats on the weight loss, I am so jealous. Second, I love this recipe because of it’s versatility. You can fill the pizza dough with chicken breast, pesto, tomato, and mozzarella or spaghetti sauce, veggies, pepperoni, mozzarella, and garlic butter on top for a quick, delicious, and healthy dinner. Heck, you could probably do something similar with a pie crust and cinnamon sugar apples for dessert. The possibilities are endless. I LOVE IT!!!!
