Friend Friday | Personal Style & Confidence

Every week I answer a series of questions proposed by Modly Chic. This week we’re talking about your personal style and confident it makes you feel.

1. When you wear an outfit that you love how does that change your mental state?

Clothes can make me feel so good and so bad if I know I look frumpy. I love a great dress, it makes me instantly feel like a lady. When I’m happy with how I’m dressed I’m more relaxed and comfortable. There is nothing worse than tugging at my clothes or feeling like something is too tight or if your shoes pinch. Then I’m just miserable for the rest of the evening.

2. Do you find that the way you dress can help you be more confident in certain situations?

Of course! For a long time I tried to convince my husband he needed to get a proper black suit. He didn’t really care, didn’t need one, always made excuses. Finally I took him to Macy’s and got him fitted in a nice black suite – the moment he put it on it was like he was a different man. He felt like he was powerful, confident and I thought he was quite handsome.

Clothing can make you feel wonderful, that’s kind of the whole philosophy behind What Not To Wear.

3. Looking back, have you become more confident in rocking your personal style?

I have always worn what I love and what I want. Always. When I was 5 I wrote a list of demands for my Mom and one of them was that I wanted to pick out my own clothes. The agreement was that I had to pick them out the night before and if she okay’d my outfit I could wear it to school. I’ve always loved dressed and color (I remember being obsessed with a color blocked pastel dress that had a ruffle collar when I was 6) and I’ve always been a bit fearless about my style and what I want to wear. As I’ve grown older I think my style has matured but it is always a reflection of my personality.

4. How do comments, in person or on your blog, impact your feelings about a look, clothing choice, etc…

My favorite comments are always the ones that give suggestions on how someone else might have styled something. That makes me rethink how I might wear an outfit the next time. I also love when people say I help them think about wearing something new or trying a new color combination.

5. To more confident, every woman should….

Own and wear the perfect shade of red lipstick. How can you not feel fearless when you have red lips?

Feel free to let me know about your favorite confidence boosting clothing choices in the comments!

  2. Like you, I picked out my own clothes since I think I had a voice I could use! And it hasn’t stopped since. BTW, that is one of my favorite color combos – blue and fuschia. And obviously, you made all those colors work in harmony, cause you pared it with neutral shoes. That’s the key, in my eyes!

  3. Love that story about you demanding to pick out your clothes. Totally hits home with me too. My mom has a very conservative style and she tried to force that on me, and I completely rebelled on her. My style is much more eclectic. She finally gave in and let me pick out my own clothes. It was even more important for me to be able to be able to pick out my own clothes since I wore uniforms and it was a weekend luxury.

    Great post!
