How To Accessorize | Colorburst

Colorburst
I had planned on showing you my Friday work outfit today and perhaps even my weekend dinner outfit (the shoes are killer) but this morning when I stepped out to take pictures I thought my outfit was so cute that I had to share it now. There are so many colors, there is a cute pattern and my latest Shop Suey Boutique pick to talk about for review – so how about I just dive right in?
Colorburst
This month for my Shop Suey Society post I got to pick whatever I wanted from them store and the choice was very easy. I wanted the Alex Shoulder bag in purple.

Why?

I’ve wanted a very lady like shoulder bag and this quilted style with a chain strap screams ladies who lunch to me but the purple color makes it more modern and youthful. Plus, I love color and am over the moon about the colorblocking trend that is so hot right now, so I’m all adding as many great pops of color to my wardrobe as I can. I love the size of this bag, it can hold my iPad, makeup bag, essentials kit, cell and more without feeling like you’re barely squeezing it shut. And if I want to wear the bag more casually I can adjust the strap to make it a crossbody bag, versatile and stylish!

The dress is from the relaunch of Target’s most popular Go International styles and it’s the Tucker for Target floral dress, that I didn’t think I’d love but I really do. I had a gift card from Target in my pocket and my neighborhood store had racks full of dresses so I tried them on yesterday and fell instantly for this dress. Instead of the matching ribbon belt I added my own metallic belt and I pulled out my favorite boyfriend cardigan to really make the flowers in the dress pop. Add a pair of We Love Colors tights in Maroon that I already had and my two-tone Mary Janes and I think this is a fun and vibrant look for spring. And if you look really close at the dress, there’s a purple outline in the flowers, hence why I’m rocking the purple bag. I find a way to make it all work together, somehow. And since I’m wearing so much color, I kept my makeup fairly neutral and light today, I didn’t really need to go heavy with lipstick or eye makeup.

I have a feeling you’ll be seeing me wear this dress a lot this spring into summer and back into fall with tights. It’s comfy, colorful and makes me feel so vibrant and that’s exactly how I like my clothes to feel. I also have  a feeling you’ll be seeing this bag on my shoulder a lot from casual to dressy, it’s just so perfect to me.

So what do you think? Like my color combos? How about the bag? Oh and don’t forget, you can get 20% off this bag (or any full price bag) at Shop Suey Boutique with the code Art20!

@ShopSueyBoutiqu Will You Be My Valentine?

Heart Clutch
I must admit, I’m not the most romantic person, despite getting engaged on Valentine’s day and having a Vegas wedding vow renewal on a Valentine’s Day weekend. I’m more of a laughter and hugs kind of girl than kisses and hearts. But when it comes to accessories I’m all in love with the Shop Suey Boutique Heart Clutch in red croc (and it also comes in a sparkly black and sparkly silver!). When I got to pick my accessory for this month’s Shop Suey Society post*, I zeroed in on the heart clutch immediately.

Heart Clutch

It’s adorable, the perfect little palm sized clutch to go with any date night outfit on Valentine’s day (if that’s your thing) or it can be a cute clutch to add to any outfit you want. Although it is palm sized, it fit my normal clutch staples: gloss, lip balm, credit cards and ID. Unfortunately my BlackBerry was too big to fit, but isn’t that what husbands are for?

And don’t forget, you can still use the ART20 code to get a 20% discount on regular priced items in the store! I saw that the Rachel bag now comes in a very fierce shade of cream (fabulous neutral and great for spring) and I’ve got my eyes on the Jessie satchel in green because it’s adorable and in my favorite color! I also had a girlfriend come by this weekend with a super cute bag, asked her where she got it from and she said, “Shop Suey Boutique…I do read the blog, you know.” HA! I haven’t seen it on the site, it might be sold out, but if I see it again I’ll have to feature it. It was definitely a cute bag!

So would you carry this for a Valentine’s Day date night?

And don’t forget to check out the Shop Suey Blog, Facebook page (they have contests) and of course the online store.

*Full disclosure: I receive the items for free to review each month and share on the Art of Accessories

I’m Chandra and I teach 20 second grade students by day, and am a blogging and social networking machine by night. I blog about modest fashion on MoMoMod—More Modern Modesty.

My fast paced teaching lifestyle coupled with dreary and foggy winter days placed me in sort of a clothing rut. I enjoy the mild central California winter months, but in more recent weeks I’ve found myself quickly pulling out all black ensembles in an effort to get dressed quickly and mask my holiday weight gain.

I enjoy dressing up and love accessories; I’ve blogged about how my love for shoes and accessories can also be somewhat of a burden when I get dressed in the mornings. I have to nix the heels and over-the-top garb for classroom purposes. On the other hand I enjoy adding a bit of color and vibrancy to my outfits—especially in the winter months.

I’ve found that a colorful scarf can brighten and liven up virtually any outfit. My trusty year old Old Navy floral patterned print scarf has helped breathe a bit o’life into many of my all black ensembles.

Ways to incorporate a scarf into your outfit:
Layer up. Add the finishing touches to a structured blazer or basic blouse by placing a loose scarf around your neck. I teach second grade, and I like to have a semi-professional-fun-loving appearance. Because my blazer and pencil skirt matched the dismal day, I knew my scarf would add some warmth and much needed color.
Contrast, Complement. Wear your scarf with an outfit that will contrast or complement the pattern of your scarf—the choice is yours.
Try a tie. Update a basic black dress by wearing a scarf like a sash around the waist. I’ve found that a black dress can be taken from day to night with the perfect accessories. In my case: the scarf! Whether you tie it obi style, or simply wrap it around your waist, you’ll find that your scarf is very versatile.

What is your accessory staple? How do you add color to your wardrobe?

Accessories I’m wearing:
Betsey Johnson Boyfriend Watch
Steve Madden Intyce Boots
Shoe Clips
BeBe Bailey Pumps

Hey guys! My name is EJ and I’ll be your guest blogger for the day! A little about me: I’m a professional stand-up comedian, lover of Chinese food, author of a little blog called You’re Welcome, and a HUGE fan of DWJ and The AofA! I’ve known DWJ since college, and over the course of our friendship she’s forced me helped me to transition from an all-black-clothes-no-makeup-wearing tomboy into the accessories and makeup lover I am today! She’s fantastic! But y’all already know that…

I know you’re accustomed to reading about beauty and fashion accessories for everyday wear and/or nights out on the town. But because I’m still kind of a tomboy, I wanted to focus this post on the importance of and best ways to accessorize for other types of situations — like professional sporting events.

OK. So maybe you’re not a big sports fan and don’t attend (m)any professional sporting events. And maybe you’re thinking, “Oh well, there was bound to be a dud this week.” But try and stick with me — this might come in handy if a friend, coworker, or boo invites you to go to a game and you wanna look your festive best! I am a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, and was lucky enough to score a ticket to the Eagles vs. Packers Wild Card Game in Philly a few weekends ago. Yay! And much like any other big event in my life, I started planning my outfit more than a week in advance (Yes, really). When styling oneself for a sporting event, the most important rule to remember is: More is more. You can never have too many pieces of flair:

Now if you don’t already have some team gear, don’t worry. You can always drop by the pro-shop before the game and pick up a few items. It’ll win you points with whomever you’re sitting with and it’ll help you feel more like a part of the ‘fan-ily’ — which in case you’re unfamiliar is an awful term I just coined and you should never ever repeat. As you can see below I was wearing 1) an Eagles skull cap, 2) a No. 10 DeSean Jackson jersey, 3) a pair of Eagles dogtags, and 4) an Eagles sweatshirt. Not pictured are: my Eagles throwback jacket, gloves, and my custom Eagles Snuggie made especially for me by none other than the fabulous DWJ.

I definitely wanted to make sure I showed my team spirit, but the main reason I was so layered up was because it was freezing that day! Of course, not all pro sporting events are held outside. But for the ones that are, it’s super important that you’re dressed appropriately for the weather.

#WhatNotToWear

This young lady was not. It was 25 degrees out that nite.

Dressing like this for a nighttime football game in January will only get you laughed at by everyone else in attendance. And no one wants to be laughed at by 70,000 strangers. Except maybe me. But that’s because I’m a comedian. I digress… She kept sending her boyfriend to buy her hot chocolate. Poor guy missed most of the second quarter.

The last — and possibly most important — accessory for cold-weather games is these toe/hand warmers. These things are amazing. I would totally buy stock in them if I knew how to buy stock in things.

So to recap: There’s no such thing as over-accessorizing when it comes to supporting your favorite sports team. Mushroom shirt, mushroom belt, special mushrooms in the lining… it’s all good.

And pants are kind of a necessity. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still be cute! Rock your flyest jeans and your fiercest boots. Get creative. Paint your face maybe! Actually… don’t paint your face. That’s ridiculous. Just put on your regular makeup. But have fun with it is my point. I really hope you enjoyed reading but if you didn’t, at least you’re 3-4 minutes closer to the next guest post and DWJ coming back.

So… there’s that.
